SPECIAL GUEST

Dr. Quinn Capers is an interventional cardiologist, professor of medicine, and

transformational leader in academic medicine. He has been widely decorated

as an educator, clinician, and champion of diversity enhancement in medicine.

A graduate of Howard University’s College of Arts and Sciences and The Ohio

State University College of Medicine, Capers trained in internal medicine,

cardiovascular diseases, and interventional cardiology at Emory University.

While a faculty member at The Ohio State University he was voted the

"Professor of the Year" by the class of 2019 and was inducted into the Society of Master Clinicians and the university’s Diversity and Inclusion “Hall of Fame”. The Dean of Admissions from 2009 to 2019, he led the first study to document the presence and extent of unconscious racial bias in medical school admissions. This highly cited paper was published in Academic Medicine and a follow up paper describing strategies to mitigate racial and gender biases in healthcare and in candidate selection has been downloaded more than 15,000 times.

Nationally, he is the recipient of the American Heart Association’s Laennec Clinician-Educator Award, the Association of American Medical Colleges Exemplary Leadership Award in Diversity and Inclusion, the American College of Cardiology’s Distinguished Award for Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion and he is a member of the Association of University Cardiologists, a national honorary of the America’s leading academic cardiologists. Capers has published extensively on diversity and healthcare disparities and has been an invited speaker at more than 65 major academic medical centers in the US and abroad. He currently serves as the Chair of the American College of Cardiology’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

In 2020 he joined the University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) Medical Center as the Rody P. Cox Endowed Professor of Medicine, the Associate Dean of Faculty Diversity and the inaugural Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Department of Internal Medicine. At UTSW he received several medical student teaching awards and led initiatives to appoint Diversity vice chairs in all 33 departments in the medical center and a Health Equity Scholars program to train junior faculty to lead health equity projects in the surrounding community.

In January, 2024 he assumed the role of Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at Howard University College of Medicine.
